Obituary for Robert Harvey Douglas

Robert Harvey  Douglas
Robert Harvey Douglas 87 of Salisbury, MD passed away at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury on Saturday, September 8, 2012.

Born July 28, 1925 in St. Anne, IL, he was the son of the late Rev. & Mrs. C.O. Douglas. Mr. Douglas graduated from Gas City, IN High School in 1943; he received a B.S. Degree from the University of Maryland in 1968, a M.A. Degree in Educational Supervision from the University of Indiana in 1971 and did Post-Graduate Studies at Salisbury University from 1968-88. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1968, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart Medal, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel on October 31, 1968 with over 25 years active service.

After his military service, Mr. Douglas worked with the Wicomico County Board of Education from 1968 to 1988. He was a classroom teacher at Wicomico Senior High School (1968-71), Vice Principal at Wicomico Senior High School (1972-75), Wicomico County Board of Education Child Study Leader (1976-88) and Supervisor/Director of Pupil Services (1975-88). He retired with 20 years of service on November 1, 1988.

Memberships include: Association of the U.S. Army, Retired Officers Association, Wicomico County Association of Principals, Supervisors, Administrators and Specialists, Muenster Lodge No. 831 AF & AM in Ulm, Germany, Eastern Shore Forest of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon (Grand Tall Cedar in 1970), Salisbury Lions Club (president in 1980), American Legion Post 64, VFW Post 194, Bethesda United Methodist Church, and Wicomico Yacht Club.

He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Douglas Monshower and her husband, Brian Cobb; granddaughter, Dr. Tara Simpson and her husband, Edward; great-grandchildren, Lillian Ruth and Nathaniel Rex Simpson; sister, Nancy Ann Adkins and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday, September 14, 2012 at 12 noon at Holloway Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Dan Rich will officiate. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock, MD

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the Christian Shelter of Salisbury, 334 Barclay St., Salisbury, MD 21804.
