Obituary for Wallace Reid "Red" Duyer

Wallace Reid "Red"  Duyer
Wallace Reid “Red” Duyer died in Harrisburg, PA on February 28, 2013. He was born in Chestertown, MD on February 26, 1924.
Mr. Duyer joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 serving as a musician in the 7th Fleet. After the war he attended West Chester College in Pennsylvania, majoring in music education.
After college he played professionally for a couple of years, then became the band director at Montoursville High School in Pennsylvania. He moved to Salisbury around 1957 to teach at Wicomico Senior High School and later at James M. Bennett Senior High School. After that he started the instrumental program in the elementary schools.
In 1958 he was a founding member of the Salisbury Unitarian Church. He directed the Salisbury Community Band from 1956 to 1973.
He studied classical guitar with Sophocles Pappas, Aaron Shearer and Mel Bay.
He returned to Mission Texas and taught classical guitar at Pan-Am University and performed with various musicians there.
Wallace is survived by his daughter, Linda Duyer of Salisbury; son, George Duyer of Germantown, MD and granddaughters, Emma Duyer and Sarah Duyer.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 11:00 am at Holloway Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private in the Eastern Shore of Maryland Veterans Cemetery.
