Obituary for Lena Belle Smullen

Lena Belle  Smullen
Lena Belle Mitchell Smullen, 87, of Salisbury, passed away on Saturday, September 29th, 2012 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury surrounded by family and friends. Born in Powellville, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Mitchell and Lucinda M. Hudson Mitchell.

She owned and operated her own beauty shop for many years known as Lena’s Beauty Salon and also did alterations for over 25 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Tabernacle, volunteered at PRMC, was a department chairman for the Wicomico Farm and Home Show and she enjoyed Bingo, knitting and playing cards with her friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Becky Smullen Mason and her husband, Darrell of Laurel; a son Michael Matthews and his companion, Sue Marine of Salisbury; a daughter in law, Debbie Smullen of Salisbury; 4 grandchildren, Tyler Mason and his wife, Michele, Melissa Mason Kuhns and her husband, Matt, John Smullen, III and his wife, Heather and Katie Magda and her husband, Drew; 3 great grandchildren, Adam Smullen, Ava Gonzales and Sam Gonzales; several nieces and nephews, including Barbara Haslam and her husband, Bill and their daughter, Jeanne Robertson, all of Salisbury; and her many friends at Calvary Baptist Tabernacle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Richard Smullen, Sr; a son, John Richard Smullen, Jr; and 2 sisters, Carrie Elizabeth Phillips and Laura Horner.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 4th, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Tabernacle with Rev. Samuel Horner and Rev. Lou Bradley officiating. There will be a visitation on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury and also on Thursday one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Calvary Baptist Tabernacle, 337 Tilghman Road, Salisbury, MD 21804.
